Motivation

#LoveWillPrevail was made out of fear, optimism, and a need to have an outlet. So many of my friends were beaten down by this election. We can all agree, on both sides of the aisle, it was a long election period—it seemed to never end. We can also agree that in this election, more than usual, there were a lot of lies, much name calling, and all in all fear. Fear that we will never attain an America that works for everyone. Nonetheless, our fears—my friends' fears—were not only rooted in economic fear, but physical and emotional fears. This left us feeling defeated and ultimately helpless. I wanted to voice my opinion in a way that was creative and able to capture this fear in a real, human sense. I also wanted to show optimism for us all—if we stand up and stand together, nothing can stop us. We've seen that over and over again in history and this should give us hope.

My partner and I spoke November 9th, 2016, after a long day's work. He passionately rambled, "The night of November 8th, 2016 was a night I will never forget. The anguish, the uncertainty, the inability to even comprehend how one could win with hate, lies and untruths. As I cried myself to sleep, thinking about how our life is likely about to dramatically change, I knew this was not a feeling humans should have. What was most difficult, was the fact that we've made so much progress—especially in the last eight years—I almost took it for granted and felt as though we could never go back. My fear: these advancements are gone forever. I hope I'm wrong, but as of now, we stand together and show each other our continued support." This was true. All of what he said was true, but I spit back, "We'll be fine. We're going to continue to stand up and fight." He looked at me saddened, but with trust. With this, #LoveWillPrevail was created.
